In addition to textbook studies; research projects; and guest speakers; the course will now include:
• Expansion of Green Festival | POLAHS’ Green Festival teaches civic engagement, problem-solving, and leadership; introduces students and community members to environmental sustainability
• Service Learning and Beautification | Volunteer work at Rancho San Pedro and San Pedro Science Center community gardens will beautify our communities, provide nutrition, and allow students to apply their understanding of local water supply issues and sustainable agriculture/urban design
• Technology | Six new classroom computers will be used for the research and scientific assessment of engineering solutions to impacts of Port activity
• Field Trips | Through field trips to wastewater treatment and recycling plants, students will assess Port activities and environmental programs related to energy, water quality, and air quality
• University Partnership | Students will spearhead climate change service learning projects in the communities of San Pedro and Wilmington through a new partnership with the University of Southern California (USC) Sea Grant “Youth Summit” climate change initiative
